Show mercy on thieves who wish to change

After our long Himalayan trip, we went to our son staying at Pune. As my husband is having some urgent work, he went back home. Yesterday, I got phone from home that as soon as my husband entering into the home, observed the removed grill of the window. My parents, lives besides our house came seeing him. Don’t know when it is happened and checked  things one by one. Iron safe is open and they called me to know the missing ones. Before coming to the trip, I put the valuables in the bank locker. Still there are small silver and gold articles along with a little money was missing. Till I went back, don’t know about the missing things as the iron safe is looking half empty and thrown the valuable beads on the bed. They didn't left anything in the house to check for the valuables. We locked the wardrobes in the both stairs which were open. They didn't go for expensive show pieces or dinner sets. Even checked the rice storage can and other almeries in the kitchen. Hats off to their patience for checking the whole house. Don’t know how long it took but they didn't captured things according to their estimation.

From early ages, I used to hear my grandfather saying, we should not feel dignity to do any work except two things. One among them is theft. I believe that as we are born in a good family and was brought up in a good guidance, we have values and good conduct. Because of parents ,family, school and environment; we acquire good qualities. According to Samuel Smiles, “Sow a thought, reap an action; Sow an action, reap a habit; Sow a habit, reap a character; Sow a character, reap a destiny". Our destiny is because of our birth, brought up, value based education acquired through books, media and environment whereas the people who chooses theft as their way of life definitely won't have guidance, proper brought up, proper education, proper parenting to live with values.

We see some street kids begging on the roads , trains and public places. Its the responsibility of the government or the society to give a good life to those kids. These neglected kids may make their lives as a pickpocketeers,  thieves , and smugglers. And some spoilt youngsters  with the influence of cinema or because of friends influence or may be because of the strong desire to lead a luxurious life or who addicted to alcohol or drugs may chose theft as their way of life.

I used to give classes to the prisoners in the sub jail. Then they used to say, once people who came here doesn't wish to come back. Listening to your teachings, we strongly feel to change ourselves. But, we can't live in the society. Though we are leading righteous life, society doesn't believe us. Even police to make their target bring us back to jail. Whether we do or not, once we did theft means we are treated as culprits. Then, I  discussed with my lawyer friends for the solution. They gave different argument which didn't satisfied me.

Whether a person was made a thief because of poverty or any other reason; the society should have mercy and should give a chance to change their lives.
