C A N A L B E A U T I F I C A T I O N.
V did field work n documentation reg.
Discussed wt Mun Commissioner,Vice-Chairman n offcrs reg.
Our moto is 2 take measures reg pollution wh may cause many hlth disorders n even Cancer.
Our wish is 2 bring back d glory n heritage of d 3 canals of Andhra Paris.
Hrd frm our parents n gr parents that they used 2 drink that water @ Turumella school .
Now v can't utilise that water even fr washing.
So Initially, v r starting this work frm Auto Nagar-Vaikuntapuram.
Reg, v r taking d support of mega compns like Sujana foundation, Natco Continental Coffee etc.
Sujana foundation promised their support fr 300 tree gaurds after today's field survey.
Mun Com told us that they can finish d canal wall construction within 2 mnths.
U can go thru our proj plan . . .

C A N A L B E A U T I F I C A T I O N.
Initial Phase:

1. Set physical limits of the canals from where to where, to include in the project
2. Decide whether one canal or all three canals for the project
3. Field trip to identify and document all the sources and points of pollution
4. Identify various types of pollutants being added to the canals at each place
5. Have an idea of how much space is available at various sites (mile marks) for future plans

Next phase:

-Local drainage in to the canal – Investigate the possibility of drain water purification systems, before that drain water can get into the canal
-Educate the people who live around that area (most likely the source of the drain water) regarding the ill effects of such contamination/stagnant water in their surroundings
-Just telling them not to drain their waste water in to the canal and explaining the ill effects of such will not be sufficient
-They need to be given a workable solution with no extra effort or cost on their part
-Some folks may be able to divert their waste water to the plantation (they could have in a small place and would be economical such as banana plants)
-Municipality may have to come forward, design and operate the water purification systems, before that waste water can run off in to the canal
-Municipal workers should be able to clean up the existing dump sites
-Trash collection system need to be implemented and should be practical to the population living along the canals so that they wouldn’t dump all their solid wastes in to the canal

-This may be a plan for future – to be able to dig out all the plastic bottom of the canal (I don’t’ know how many inches the plastic may be pervading), so that water can actually sink underground (replenishing ground water)
-Eliminate non-recyclable plastics, not the consumer level, but at the manufacturing level

Resources:

-Volunteers to accomplish the above tasks
-For some time the public education may need to be on an on-going basis for a while (until they appreciate the advantages of having a clean neighborhood)
-Need to have resources to document the problems in the first stage
-During this process, one may encounter resistance and other anti-social deeds from the community. We need the municipality to back these types of projects done by volunteers and educate the public and may not be a bad idea to have once of the municipal worker tag along

-Once above goal is reached, one can actually establish parks and other recreational facilities along the canals
-Canal side wall may be an absolute necessity
-Statues of great people for inspiration
-Facilities for people to walk or run
-Toilet facilities along the banks
-Venders may be allowed at particular places (restrict to what items they can sell) and this could be a source of income for the municipality. (Absolutely no tobacco products or alcohol)
-Drinking water taps (not selling bottled water) providing clean/safe drinking water
-Illumination: These can be lamps with solar panels and sensors to turn on when it’s dark and off at dawn
-Once the area is made beautiful, a boat trip along the canal from Nandivelugu to Pedaravuru and or bits and pieces of that route will be a good possibility – Revenue from renting row-boats or peddling boats
-Public phones from various locations along the path (with no charge when dialing for police or emergency numbers such as 108) with prompt response time
